Kimbolton Library

It was a chilly night in the small village of Kimbolton, but warm inside this historic library (especially with lots of bodies in a small space!)

The building is one of the few remaining two room cottages in the area that are in their original format. We had an entertaining and interesting introduction to the history of the building and the library from Simon Johnson (Feilding Library).

The library was the focus of a "problem solving" project for a small group of primary school children in 2009 and several of the children were present to tell us about the project. They fundraised to renovate the library and grounds.

This group of children (and some dedicated parents and teachers) won the National Junior Award for Community Problem Solving. From there, they entered the International competition, and flew to Michigan to compete with school children from all around the world. They raised a total of $58000.00 to get there and enter. The highlight was that they won the International Award for Community Problem-solving and came home victorious.

Apparently the trophy had to fly home first class as it needed its own seat!

This is a fantastic achievement from a small community and school (the roll is 60) with a population of 1000 in Kimbolton.

The library visit was followed up by a lovely meal at Hansen's cafe in Kimbolton with a roaring open fire :-)

Ikaroa Regional Councillor

Hi all

Hopefully you are all aware that I am your Regional Councillor for the 2010-12 period. I made the decision to stand for re-election as I feel like I still have work to do on Council, and I am still 100% committed to the role.

Although it turned out that I was unopposed, I did prepare a short statement in case of an election and I thought it might be handy for those of you that don't know me to see what I stand for. So, here it is ...

I have represented the Ikaroa Region on National Council for the previous two years and am seeking re-election to this role.

There are challenging times ahead for all sectors of our profession and it is my belief that now, more than ever, we need a Council which is experienced and knowledgeable. I believe that I bring that experience to the region and also to Council. Having worked in both public and academic libraries, and in rural and urban settings I have a good understanding of the issues faced by our profession from a variety of perspectives.

I have really enjoyed getting out around the Region over my current term, and feel privileged to have been your representative. I have a heartfelt passion for the good that libraries do in our communities and the value that we all, as professionals, bring to our organisations.

Visit Kimbolton Library!

Kimbolton Library visit – 27th May 2010

Join Ikaroa LIANZA for a visit to the historic Kimbolton Public Library.

Located in Edwards Street, the library operates from one of the oldest remaining buildings in Kimbolton, with the cottage gifted to the Kiwitea County Council Library Committee by Rev J F Mayo about 70 years ago. The Library was the focus of a problem-solving project for local school children in 2008. The group of eight Kimbolton school children won the prestigious title of being the best junior problem solvers in the world, having won the International Junior Community Problem Solving Challenge competition in the US for their work on the Library.

The Library will be open for us from 5.45pm for viewing and a presentation. Then, those that are keen can have a meal at Hansen’s Cafe in Kimbolton.

If you are interested in carpooling please let me know how many and where from and I’ll do my best to coordinate.

LIANZA Council Elections

LIANZA Secretary, Alli Smith, is calling for nominations for the LIANZA Council for the 2010/11 year.

Nominations are being sought for the roles of President Elect, Ikaroa Councillor, Otago/Southland Councillor and Waikato/Bay of Plenty Councillor.

All nominations for the 2010/11 Council elections will close at 5pm on Thursday 20^th May 2010.

Who can Nominate and Stand?

Any Personal Member of the Association or the Authorised representative of an Institutional Member may nominate any other Personal Member for election to a position as Officer on the National Council.
Any Personal Member of the Association or the Authorised representative of an Institutional Member in a particular Region may nominate any other Personal Member in that Region as Councillor for that Region on the National Council.

Who can vote?

The Officers of the LIANZA National Council are elected by Personal and Institutional Members of the Association.

Regional Councillors of the LIANZA National Council are elected by LIANZA Personal and Institutional Members within that Region.

Voting Papers

If an election for any position is held, voting papers will be sent to members for a poll.

Fizz! Bang! Pop! - South Taranaki District Libraries

It all went off with a Bang in South Taranaki.

Kids who wanted to have fun in South Taranaki during the April school holidays headed for the South Taranaki District Libraries where ‘everything was going off with a bang!’

But with the theme Fizz! Bang! Pop! what else would you expect? New Zealand award -inning children’s author Des Hunt was in town encouraging the children to ‘Have fun with science- doing crazy experiments’. At his workshops the children made elephant toothpaste, test tube rainbows, created incredibly loud explosions with nail polish remover and film canisters and learnt how to melt steel effectively. All the experiments were designed to excite the children about science – and it worked! Also on board for the holidays was Bright Sparks educator, Andrew Hornblow. Children attending these electronic workshops enjoyed making circuit boards and LED lights to take home.

Other crazy experiments included making ginormous bubbles. First the children had to construct their bubble loop, and then make the mixture. All the activities were a lot of fun, the libraries bubbled with excitement throughout the two week holiday period and preparation for staff was minimal- which is always a bonus! This was a great way to link the science books in the library with hands on activities and hopefully leaves this generation with the feeling that libraries are a great place to be.

Funding was provided through local sponsorship and carries on the local theme of children having fun with science.

A Symposium on Mobile Libraries

In late January there will be a series of symposia on mobile technologies in libraries (m-libraries). More information can be found here:

Each symposium will consist of a full day of activities. Presentations, showcases and workshops of m-learning in action with critical focus on library planning, implementation and delivery will be highlights of each symposium.

Massey University Library has agreed to host the Palmerston North seminar and will cover the full cost of Dr. Ally’s day in Palmerston North, so the only cost to registrants from other libraries is the $25 to cover lunch and morning and afternoon teas. If you have staff who would be interested in attending, we need registrations by the end of Monday 18th Jan.

Featuring International Speaker : Prof. Mohamed Ally

Dr. Mohamed Ally is Professor in Distance Education and Director of the Centre for Distance Education at Athabasca University, Canada and a recognised expert in the field of mobile technologies and mobile learning.

The international speaker at each location will be Dr. Mohamed Ally. Dr. Mohamed Ally is Professor in Distance Education and Director of the Centre for Distance Education at Athabasca University, Canada. His current areas of research include mobile learning, mobile libraries, e-learning, and the use of information and communication technology in training and education. Dr. Ally is Past-President of the International Federation of Training and Development Organizations (IFTDO) and is one of the Founding Directors of the International

Association of Mobile Learning. He is also on the board of the Canadian Society for Training and Development. Dr. Ally is currently serving on an international committee to set standards for Learner Information in Nomadicity and Mobile Learning. Dr. Ally chaired the Fifth World Conference on Mobile Learning and co-chaired the First International Conference on Mobile Libraries. He recently edited a book on mobile learning and co-edited a second book on the use of mobile technology in libraries. In addition, Dr. Ally serves on many journal boards and conference committees. He has presented keynote speeches, workshops, papers, and seminars in twenty countries.

Ikaroa Library Assistants' Day

The 2009 Ikaroa Library Assistants' Day held at National Library in Palmerston North was a day of fun and learning enjoyed by 23 participants from across the region. Participants reported going back to their libraries energised and motivated.

Librarians, library assistants and school librarians were welcomed by ou LIANZA President, Barbara Garriock by videoconference. This was the first videoconference for many of the participants. Barbara spoke warmly about the importance of Library Assistants in their organisations.

A "Speedbooking" session presented by School Library Adviser, Jan Watts got people chatting and sharing straight away. You can read more about Speedbooking on the Create Readers Blog
http://createreaders.natlib.govt.nz/2008/08/spice-up-your-book-club-with-speed.html . The speedbookers were amazed at how much they could find to talk about when the books had no words!

The energy and commitment of Kiri Thompson, Youth Librarian at the Palmerston North City Library inspired us all. Kiri's domain is The Basement, a youth zone housing novels, magazines, dvds and games, with comfortable casual seating, Sky TV and gaming consoles. Kiri and staff from the City Library have hosted youth events in The Basement (and wider Library) jointly with the City's Youth Council, and thinkgs like the Pulse Street Dance party have been hugely successful, with around 700 attendees at the last event.

During our Web 2.0 session we looked at the Memory Maker widget from Auckland Museum on the Digital New Zealand website and talked about the use of Twitter in libraries. Courtney Johnson's post on the LibraryTechNZ Blog gave us a good starting point for discussion http://librarytechnz.natlib.govt.nz/search/label/Courtney%20Johnston.

The introduction to Memory Maker in the morning meant that afer a quick bus ride to UCOL our participants were able to get straight in to making their own videos using the UCOL Library's lendable laptops kindly organised for us by Doreen Young and Dianne McConnell. This was an enjoyable and instructional activity with everyone being able to view each others' masterpieces once we returned to National Library http://remix.digitalnz.org/

IKAROA REGION LIBRARY ASSISTANT'S DAY
18th November 2009

Ikaroa Region of LIANZA invites all Library Assistants from the region to a Library Assistant's Day on November 18th.

The registration fee of $50 for members of LIANZA, SLANZA and Te Ropu Whakahau and $60 for non-members includes morning and afternoon tea, lunch and bus travel from National Library to UCOL and back. Registrations are limited to 40 people.

Presentation Skills Workshop

On Tuesday 29 September, the Ikaroa sponsored workshop on Presentation skills was held in the Training Room at Massey University, Turitea campus.

It was well attended by many librarians throughout the region. The highly engaging session was facilitated by John Howells from the Centre for Academic Development and eLearning at Massey University and covered such topics as:
• How to write an effective abstract
• How to present to an audience
• How to use visual aids
• How to handle questions

For myself i found the most useful part was the contributions and feedback from my fellow attendees and particularly from my group: Beth and Joann from Horowhenua Public Library and Pamela from National Library. (Hiya ladies! )

The Presenter:
• Humour: having a bit of humour can break the ice and allows you to form a rapport with your audience. But don’t overdo it.
• Be confident and knowledgeable on your topic. If posed a question you can't answer acknowledge that and say "yes, that's a good question. I'm not sure of the answer but i know someone who does. I'll introduce you after the presentation" or something to that effect.

• Personal presentation: Ensure you are properly attired! No knickers showing above your trousers please, or fiddling with your hair.

• Voice: Speak clearly and smoothly, neither too fast nor too slow and use modulation for interest. And watch those ‘ums’!

Content:
• Tell a story or a journey with your presentation, perhaps start with an anecdote. Make it personal. In our exercises I was interested in how the situation affected people especially the person talking.
• Provide a clear summary of your main points or ideas at the end.
• Have a theme, preferably one that ties in with the conference, or a keyword that succinctly describes your presentation.

Other things to remember are:
Check out your venue first. For example if you have an interactive session planned the room may not be suitable.

Know your audience and be culturally sensitive and respectful.

And finally a tip on using visual aids, particularly powerpoints.
Don’t rely on them to do the presentation for you! Always have a Plan B if the technology fails. Others said that they went to a conference where the version of Microsoft Office was different and all the fancy animations were lost.

And remember:
“The only difference between the pros and a novice [presenter] is that the pros have trained the butterflies to fly in formation.”

UCOL Hub - Visit

Well, the evening was quite mild when a bunch of enthusiastic librarians from the Ikaroa region got together at UCOL's Hub. The evening began with pleasant chatting over a glass of wine and a nibble followed by a presentation and tour of the Hub by Library Manager Doreen Young, and Liaison and Information Services Librarians Sharon Ritchie and Dianne McConnell.

Regional Councillor's Report to the Region

LIANZA Council met for a full day in Wellington on 11 August. This was the first face-to-face meeting of the 2009-2010 Council.

Key outcomes of this meeting:
Governance Structure
• after analysis of survey results and Council discussion is was decided that there was not a clear mandate to implement all the changes in the discussion paper, significantly the changes to regional councillor roles and Te Ropu Whakahau representation.
• The following will be drafted as motions to be put at the AGM
o Formal adoption of the draft purpose statement
o Vice-President to be disestablished and a President-Elect role established.

Institutional Membership/Fee Structure
While the FTE model was agreed as a fair way to establish fees, this needs more work on scenarios and modelling. A small group will be set up to carry on with this work.

Strategic Direction
Council continues to work on our key strategic goals of Advocacy and Membership Services. Regional Councillors will have two specific actions around membership & engagement to focus on for the coming two months.
Mine are to establish a regular communication plan to the Region (this blog post is part of it :-)), and to investigate how I can help those who want to set up regular forums for registered librarians to get together (virtually or physically).

Professional Development Plan
Work on the 2010 plan is progressing. Please continue to feed ideas on possible CPD through to me or direct to Maree Kibblewhite.

Penny Carnaby - National Librarian
Penny joined us and discussed issues at the National Library. Over the next 18 months Penny will be "on the road" a lot. Would this be a chance to have her join us for a Regional meeting?

Other items of interest

Work on the redevelopment of LIANZA's online presence continues with the establishment of a small working group to drive this forward.
It is satisfying to see this start to move foward and I look forward to development in the near future.

We had a successful AGM last night, which was well attended.

Changes:
Anne Odogwu has taken over from Heather Lamond as treasurer, who stepped down due to other workloads. Pauline Knuckey stepped down from the committee but nominated Jay Robinson from PN City Library. Amanda Curnow from Massey University also joins the committee. Our thanks to Heather and Pauline!

Rosalie Blake gave us an interesting talk about her "blasphemies", outlining achievements gained from stepping outside the norm and running with good ideas, acting on intuition rather than following rigid procedures.

The minutes will be sent out when completed.

LIANZA Conference Update - Christchurch 2009

The LIANZA 2009 Conference Committee is very excited to offer one FREE registration to a first time LIANZA member. All you have to do is become a member - no Conference registration is required to enter the draw. The winner will be contacted in first week of August 2009.If you are already a LIANZA member this offer is not for you, however, it is a great opportunity for a non LIANZA colleague or friend to join up, come to conference AND have their registration paid for so spread the word. First announcements of Keynote Speakers

Claudia Lux
For the last two years Professor Claudia Lux, has held the position of Director General of the Foundation Central and Regional Library, Berlin, (the biggest Metropolitan Library in Germany). By the time Professor Lux speaks at the LIANZA Conference 2009 in October she will be the outgoing IFLA President with current "president-elect" Ellen Tise filling the role. The Conference Programme Sub-committee is excited to present someone of Claudia's knowledge and international standing to participate in this year's conference.

Sir Tipene O'Regan
Sir Tipene O'Regan is Assistant-Vice-Chancellor Maori at the University of Canterbury, Chairman of Ngā Pae o Te Maramatanga, the Centre for Maori Research Excellence at the University of Auckland and Upoko of the Awarua Runanga of Ngai Tahu. He has published and lectured extensively over many years on Ngai Tahu traditional history, Polynesian migration, Treaty issues and the evolution of biculturalism and the wider politics of Māoridom.
Hana O'Regan
Hana O'Regan was raised in Wellington in a family immersed in Māori Treaty and identity politics. She received her secondary schooling at Queen Victoria Māori Girls Boarding School in Auckland before becoming an American Field Scholar in Thailand for one year. Hana returned to pursue an undergraduate degree with a double major in Māori Studies and Political Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington.
Hana has been a member of The Māori Language Commission - Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori - since 2003. The bulk of Hana's recent publications has been centred on Kāi Tahu tribal stories and histories for rakatahi, and most recently published an anthology of Māori poetry, Kupu with co-author Charisma Rangipunga.

Richard Stallman
Twenty-five years ago he launched the GNU operating system. GNU is free software: everyone has the freedom to copy it and redistribute it, as well as to make changes either large or small. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of computers today. Stallman pioneered the concept of copyleft, and is the main author of the GNU General Public License, the most widely used free software license.

Jessica Dorr - Program Officer, Global Libraries
Jessica Dorr's work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation began in 1997, as a technology trainer for West Seattle Learns, a community technology centre. She currently oversees grants to Mexico, Latvia, and Lithuania and supports the foundations' annual Access to Learning Award. Jessica has experience with both school and academic libraries and holds a BA from Georgetown University and an MLIS from the University of Washington.

Governance discussion

We had a really good session in Hastings last night, great numbers (Go East-In SIG!) and lively discussion. Although based around the LIANZA papers this was a wide ranging discussion around what LIANZA could do better, how to engage the membership and encourage younger people both into the profession and to join LIANZA.

I left you all with a question to consider:
What could LIANZA stop doing in order to move forward on the things you want us to do?

HYDESTOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD

· Would a grant of $750 incl GST, per LIANZA region, help further your Professional development?

Hydestor Shelving Systems are proud to sponsor a professional development award to LIANZA members. Its primary purpose is to assist LIANZA members to undertake various forms of professional development in the field of library management and operation. This annual award set at $4,500 inclusive of GST is divided equally over the six NZ regions.

Previously, Hydestor Manufacturing Ltd has sponsored hard copy newsletters for various regions of LIANZA and with these newsletters becoming electronic; it was proposed that the sponsorship be continued in a new format such as this Professional Development Award. This award is not limited to any specific activity and members should be encouraged to apply for assistance for any activity that will develop and enhance their professional skills. The applications and recipients of the award are to be administered by each regional chairperson and committee.

• Applicant must be a current LIANZA member

• Applicant must complete the application form and state the Continuing Professional Development event, activity or purpose for which they are applying for the Hydestor Professional Development Award.

• The applicant must state in their application how the award will develop or enhance their professional skills

Update: Due to a combination of poor health, bad weather and low RSVPs this event has been cancelled. Don't forget to give your feedback through the online survey.

Ikaroa region would like to invite members to discuss the recently announced LIANZA proposals on enhancing the Association's governance structure, and the changing of institutional member fee bands and rates.

Regional Councillor Heather Lamond will facilitate an informal meeting, talking to the proposals and seeking your feedback. The deadline for feedback on these proposals is 6th July and will be gathered using an online survey.

Attending this meeting can be used to provide comment in the professional revalidation journal under body of knowledge 1 ‘The information environment, information policy and ethics, and history of the field’, or as an example of 4. The information transfer process.

If you have a blog of your own, give us the link to share.
If you want to provide photos of your library, your staff, or events, do so! It would be nice to see who and where you are.
If you want to raise an issue, email us or comment.

I'd like to see this blog continue past this experimental period and to do so we need your help!

Each of the papers has a series of questions for you to consider and to which you may wish to contribute feedback. We will be running a survey from the Monday 8th June to Tuesday 6th July using Survey Monkey and you will be sent the link to this survey on the 8th June.

In the meantime I am planning for a series of meetings in the Region to discuss these proposals, so keep an eye out for the notices about the dates of meetings in your area.

Once you have read the papers we would encourage you to attend your regional meeting for discussion and clarification of the proposals. We would appreciate any formal feedback you have on the proposals to be expressed using the survey to enable us to manage and analyse the responses.

Our theme this year is "he tangata, he tangata, he tangata", and we are looking for contributions that celebrate the importance of people, both within and outside our profession. The Conference will "Acknowledge the past, Embrace the present, and Advance the Future".

Council update

Hi all
As previously mentioned at various meetings, there is a discussion paper forthcoming around LIANZA's Governance structure (watch for it in the next couple of weeks).
Councillors have been asked to attend meetings in their region to discuss the proposal and gather feedback. At this stage these meetings would need to be sometime between mid-May and the end of May.
I am happy to come out to TIG-SIG and EastIn SIG for these meetings, and there will be a meeting in Palmerston North (details to follow).
Those in Taranaki and Hawkes Bay, please give some thought to possible dates and venues for later in May and let me know.

Also, the Remuneration Survey for 2008 was released sometime ago and I'd like to know if there is interest in having a presentation in Ikaroa on the Survey.

Our theme, as announced in the February edition of Library Life is he tangata, he tangata, he tangata. We want to celebrate the importance of people associated with our profession. There are those who have gone before us, those who walk alongside us now and those who will lead us into the future.
There are so many opportunities to be involved in LIANZA 2009 conference whether it be as a delegate, speaker/presenter, exhibitor or sponsor. We welcome your participation in any way you choose.

Thanks to all those who attended the session at Massey. If you have further questions or concerns please feel free to contact me directly (h.m.lamond@massey.ac.nz). Sounds like there will be a bit of a roadshow with me taking the session to Hawkes Bay and Taranaki in the near future.

Don't forget that the best place to get all the information you need is the LIANZA website.

And here's another idea, I'm looking at setting up a "support group" for people doing their journals here at Massey - a way to get together and work on our journals. Maybe others can organise small groups to get together say once every month or so?
